Muay Thai is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This physical and mental discipline which includes combat on shins is known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins, being associated with a good physical preparation that makes a full-contact fighter very efficient. It became widespread internationally in the twentieth century, when practitioners defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts.
There are muay thai training camps all over Thailand which have also always been used during the holiday. It is also a great way to relax and lose weight. The physical commitment is like no other as it gets you into the best physical shape greatly improving your health. Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi, Koh Phangan, Issan etc, all have very effective camps sometimes inside gyms.
You may be reading this because you are contemplating a trip to Thailand for training, but you haven't fully committed. Fear of the unknown maybe? If that is the case, just finalize your decision and book that flight. It may seem far, but really, even if you are coming from the other side of the world, its one day of travel. One day, that's it. What do you really accomplish in one day anyway? Its worth the sacrifice to expand your horizons, experience a new culture and pick up some epic stories to tell your grandchildren one day. Nobody lies on their death bed wishing they had travelled less. The world is big and our time here is short. See as much as you can while you have the opportunity.
With the success of muay Thai in the mixed martial arts, it has become the de facto style of choice for competitive stand-up fighters. As a result, western practitioners have incorporated much more powerful hand striking techniques from boxing although some Thai purists accuse them of diluting the art.
In 1993, the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur, or IFMA was inaugurated. It became the governing body of amateur Muay Thai consisting of 128 member countries worldwide and is recognized by Olympic Council of Asia.
