Muay Thai was originally used as a combat skill in battles. Thai armies were taught Muay Thai in their efforts to defend the land against conquerors. However, Muay Thai was used as more than just a skill in the battlefield. In the 1500's, Muay Thai was used as a competition to settle national issues. In fact, this sport was known as a king sport, as most Thai kings were trained in this sport. Over the centuries, even if Thailand was at peace, the army continuously competes in Muay Thai competitions. As you can see, right from the start, Muay Thai was already enjoyed by the citizens as a spectator sport, and it definitely kept them entertained and battle-ready. Eventually, the king of Thailand adjusted the perception towards Muay Thai by creating a ring for the competitors. This made Muay Thai an “official†sport and many took to training with this in mind. Over the course of the centuries, Muay Thai evolved from a skill in the battlefield, to a contact sport with discipline and set rules.
